What Size Storage Unit Do I Need?

The unit size you need depends on what you plan to store. These sizes work best for the most common moving and vehicle storage situations:

Fit More in Less Space

Pack smart and you may be able to rent a smaller unit and save money each month.

Use Same-Size Boxes

Uniform boxes stack higher and more securely than mixed sizes, so you use every foot of your unit.

Heavy on the Bottom

Put heavy boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top to keep stacks stable and protect your belongings.

Take Furniture Apart

Remove table legs, bed frames, and shelves. Keep the hardware in a labeled bag taped to the piece.

Leave a Walkway

Leave a small aisle down the middle so you can reach things in the back without unpacking everything.

Label Every Box

Label each box on the top and side, and put the things you'll need most near the front of the unit.

Build Up, Not Out

Stack tall and add shelving to use the full height of your unit. You might fit in a smaller size and save money.

Storage for Oversized Items

Storing a vehicle, boat, or bulky furniture? Here's what usually fits.

Motorcycles

Best fit: 5' × 10' or larger

Almost all motorcycles are longer than five feet, which makes a 5' × 10' unit (or larger) a great indoor storage option for your bike.

Cars, SUVs & Trucks

Best fit: 10' × 20'

The smallest cars might fit in a 10' × 15', but most cars, SUVs, vans, and even some pickups fit easily in a 10' × 20'. Larger vans and trucks may need a 10' × 25' or 10' × 30'.

Boats & Jet Skis

Best fit: 10' × 20' to 10' × 30'

A jet ski on its trailer usually fits in a 10' × 15' or 10' × 20'. Small fishing boats on a trailer fit in a 10' × 20', and longer boats need a 10' × 25' or 10' × 30'. Measure with the trailer tongue and motor included.

Snowmobiles

Best fit: 10' × 15' or larger

Most snowmobiles are 10–11 feet long, so a 10' × 15' is a comfortable fit for one sled. Storing two sleds or keeping one on its trailer? Go with a 10' × 20' or larger.

ATVs & Side-by-Sides

Best fit: 5' × 10' to 10' × 20'

A standard ATV fits in a 5' × 10'. Side-by-sides (UTVs) are longer and wider, so plan on a 10' × 15' or 10' × 20'.

Kayaks & Canoes

Best fit: 5' × 15' to 10' × 20'

Most kayaks fit in a 5' × 15' or 10' × 15'. Canoes up to 16 feet long need a 10' × 20'. Pick a unit longer than your longest boat.

Riding Mowers & Lawn Tractors

Best fit: 5' × 10'

Most riding mowers fit in a 5' × 10'. Need room for a trailer, snow blower, or other yard equipment too? Step up to a 10' × 10'.

Pianos

Best fit: depends on the piano

Pianos come in all shapes and sizes. An upright piano usually fits in a 5' × 5' or 5' × 10', while baby grand and grand pianos need a 10' × 10' or larger.

Mattresses

Best fit: 5' × 5' to 5' × 10'

  • Twin & Full: a 5' × 5' easily fits any mattress smaller than a queen.
  • Queen: it might squeeze into a 5' × 5', but a 5' × 10' is a much better fit.
  • King: won't fit in a 5' × 5'. Choose a 5' × 10' or larger.

Couches & Sectionals

Best fit: 5' × 10' to 10' × 10'

A standard couch or loveseat fits in a 5' × 10'. Large sectionals, recliners, or a full living room set need a 10' × 10' or larger.

Appliances

Best fit: 5' × 10' or larger

A refrigerator, washer, and dryer fit in a 5' × 10'. Storing appliances with furniture and boxes? Plan on a 10' × 10' or larger. Make sure they're clean and completely dry first.

Business Inventory & Equipment

Best fit: 10' × 10' to 10' × 30'
